What is edge-tolerance?

The rich edge is where change and exchange happens, between habitats, communities, populations of plants, people, animals, life. There are infinite edges, edges within edges everywhere. Immeasurable possibilities for creative cross-pollination, influence, diversity.

Standing between colonnade and open plaza, between the columns, this is an edge with potential.

 

We name boundaries, we need to know where something, someone is and is not, their bodies, minds, spirits. Yet it is hard to maintain a tight edge; there are always cracks, trespassers, migration, overflow, heresy, invasive species, succession, and curiosity. Every building wall, every street, is a rigid edge; the more urban, the sharper the edges.
