A game of poetry

The Dada poem game explained:

  • Pick a theme or a topic to write about

  • The first person starts the poem and writes 2-4 lines, after which, the person will hide some of the text, but not quite all. This is easily done by changing the colour of the font to white. Mark // where you have finished, so that the person coming after does not write over some of the hidden text.

  • The second person will continue the poem, but will only see what is left visible. They can work as writing prompts. Repeat the same process of hiding some of the text and pass the poem to the next person and so on.

  • After having repeated this process as many times as you have decided, meet to reveal the poem by changing the font colour back to black. We were three people and each took two turns with the poem, creating six stanzas altogether. It can be a good idea to highlight/cursive/bold the words that were left visible in the first part.

  • Now it is time to deconstruct the poem. Change the order and again take turns to go through it. The person starting first will hide some of the words from the first stanza. The second one can see what the first one has done and continue with the second stanza and so on. Remember to do each other's texts, not your own.

  • We have five of these poems we created together: Legends, Edges, Cracks, Ripples and the Colonnade.
