13.43% of the population in Canada, claim full or partial Irish ancestry, according to the census 2016.

Many with Irish ancestry, especially the young, now feel distanced from their heritage, due to lack of research and knowledge about of the integral role the Irish have played in the evolution of Canadian society

Irish exiles serving with the French forces in New France often concealed their identity from the British forces by changing their names to French-sounding ones. Thus many names in Quebec, which are supposed French, are not found in France. 

The year of 1847 was a bad year for the Irish, many leaving their home country during the great famine to arrive with a typhus epidemic to Montreal. The total number of deaths among emigrants heading for Quebec City is estimated at 17,477.
