Columns are supports that are not walls. You can meander around them like trees in a forest. They impress by their individual strength, and lined up, they remind us of community, each sharing a part of a load. This stirs us in awe, whether they are natural or human-made .

Ancient cultures compared and designed columns to the human figure. Classical Greek columns have become symbols of colonization and can be found in infinite variations throughout the world.

The architecture of this colonnade is part of this history. This modernist version remains in our collective memory as a device of empire.

The Giants Causeway, also non-carrying, astonishes by its natural power. A unfathomable phenomenon of endless wonder.

As removed as they are from each other, they both intrigue as monumental vertical sculpture inviting us to walk, and connect sky and ground.
